Adalbert Trilhaase comes from an Erfurt merchant family of medium means. After completing his commercial apprenticeship, he ran a linen factory in Bielefeld for a while. He then travelled extensively and learned from foreign experiences before starting a steelworks in 1895 in Hagen. This led to the founding of the IG Stahlwerke, one of the most influential steel companies in Germany at that time.
At that time, Hagen was a highly industrialised region in North Rhine-Westphalia with a large coal mining industry and many small-scale factories. Trilhaase built up the company to a leading enterprise in the Ruhr area. The IG Stahlwerke was one of the most significant industrial companies in West Germany and the most important steel manufacturer in Europe.
The company was renowned for its quality and innovative products. It also had an outstanding reputation in the field of technology. In addition to the production of machinery, the IG Stahlwerke also developed and produced special steel grades for the automotive industry. During the Nazi era, the company was one of the most powerful economic forces in the Ruhr region and a model for the development of German economy and industry.

At that time, the company had more than 4,000 employees. In 1949, it was nationalised and its ownership was transferred to the Federal Government of the Bundesrepublik Deutschland (FRG). Today, the IG Stahlwerke is one of the most modern steelworks in Germany.
The company is now an important employer in the Ruhr area and has more than 2,500 employees. In addition, the IG Stahlwerke is an important supplier of raw materials in North Rhine-Westphalia.
